ROBBIE ENTERS
ROBBIE
(TO EDNA) Cyn says Jester’s a sweet little girl.
EDNA
Did Cynthia say how old she is?
ROBBIE
Mom,I would never ask Cynthia how old she is.
ESTRELLA
Did Cynthia say how old little Jester is?
ROBBIE
She said about two years old. Probably.
ESTRELLA
(CHECKING RECORDS ON THE COMPUTER) I’ll just add Jester to Linda’s file.
ROBBIE
How many does this make?
EDNA
Robbie, we never ask Linda how many cats she has. (TO ESTRELLA) Is Emily busy, hon? I need to ask her something.
ESTRELLA
Trust me, Edna, you don’t want to talk to Emily right now.
ROBBIE
I don’t think you could, Mom. There’s some guy in her office who won’t let anyone talk but him.
EDNA
Estrella?
ESTRELLA
Interview for a new-hire.

INTERIOR TREATMENT ARENA –DAY
CYNTHIA CRADLES JESTER IN ONE ARM AS SHE TALKS ON THE PHONE
CYNTHIA
That’s wonderful! Do you have to be there? … When do you have to leave? … What? How can you do that? How can you get ready by then? … Well, how long will you have to be there? … WHAT? … Of course it’s wonderful … I know it’s what you’ve been working for … No, baby, that’s not what I meant. I’ll just miss you, that’s all … No, Armando, I can’t … You know I can’t. … Mando, I’ve got to take care of this kitten right now … Love you, too, baby.
CYNTHIA ENTERS THE RECEPTION AREA, STILL HOLDING JESTER.
CYNTHIA
Estrella! Armando’s going to have his work exhibited in a New York gallery!
ROBBIE
But he’s not in New York, Cyn.
CYNTHIA
No, but his agent is. And Armando will be, too, this time next week. Hi, Edna.
EDNA
(TO CYNTHIA) Hello, dear. (TO ESTRELLA) Estrella, I really need to talk to Dr. Em. I told Linda that Emily would talk to her second graders a week from Friday.
CYNTHIA
Above my pay grade. I’m outa here.
CYNTHIA EXITS
ESTRELLA
Let me check her calendar. Next Friday’s really full.
EDNA
But this is Be Kind To Animals Week. Linda’s counting on it.
ESTRELLA
(ON THE INTERCOM) Dr. Em, could you come out here for a minute?
EMILY
(VOICE OVER THE INTERCOM) NO.
ESTRELLA
(TO EDNA) She has had that guy in there forever. It can’t be pretty.
EMILY
(VOICE OVER THE INTERCOM) Whatever it is, Estrella, you’ve got to take care of it.
EDNA
Dr. Em! You’re scheduled to talk to Linda’s second graders on Friday.
EMILY
(VOICE OVER THE INTERCOM) Edna? Is this some special favor?
ESTRELLA
Robbie and I are doing a favor.
EDNA
What?
ESTRELLA
Robbie and I are giving a talk to Linda’s second graders!
EMILY
(VOICE OVER THE INTERCOM) So this has nothing to do with me?
ESTRELLA
Right. Nothing. Nope. Not you. I don’t know why I even bothered you.
EMILY
(VOICE OVER THE INTERCOM) It’s okay. It’s all right. (PAUSE) Bye, Edna.

A. MICHAEL
Exactly. That’s why I’m here.
EMILY
What?!
A. MICHAEL
Okay, Uncle Stuart said you’re looking for a vet to bring into the practice.
EMILY
And what exactly does that have to do with you?
A MICHAEL
Dr. Mayfield, I am a licensed veterinarian.
EMILY
A. Michael, you are the nephew of my best friend and I’ll admit you’re a smart kid, but —
A MICHAEL
I was a smart kid. I am now a skilled veterinarian.

EMILY
Why? … What do you think you’re doing, sending your nephew to my clinic uninvited … Yes, I know he was first in his class … It doesn’t matter. I don’t have time. … No, Stuart, not even for you. … Look, we’ll talk about this later. … After puppies, Stuart. (TO ESTRELLA) Estrella, take this phone, will you? Thanks.

Opening Credits
EXTERIOR MAIN STREET CLEARWATER FLORIDA – DAY
P.O.V. DRIVER OF VEHICLE- ESTRELLA
She parks the car in front of Mayfield Veterinary Clinic. As she walks to front door she waves to Gordon next door at the Chipper Clipper. She unlocks the front door and walks over and uncovers the parrot and we see Estrella with the parrot. She turns the light on the fish. She goes to the reception desk and tosses the keys and a man’s hand catches the keys and unlocks the medicine cabinet for the prescription drugs for the animals. The man with the hands goes back to take care of the animals and we see tennis shoes and gentle hands feeding and stroking and we see Robbie when he picks up a bunny. He throws keys back to Estella when she whistles for them as he is taking the clinic dog (a rescued racing greyhound) out to the exercise area. Estrella opens Emily’s office and we meet Emily through her office—picture of three kids and a horse (Emily and her two older brothers), a picture of teen-aged Emily holding baby brother Jerry, and a picture of a group of college graduates in caps and gowns. There are diplomas on the wall behind the credenza. Sweep counterclockwise to see old, masculine, massive desk cluttered with files, x-rays, computer, jar of dog treats, tennis ball and other dog toys, and a smaller jar of mints. Sweep further to include coat rack and old boots and a heavily used dog bed on the floor. Sweep past bookcases with piles of books, some open, and to wall with more photos tacked to aging grass cloth. Photos are of sundry animals, people, both, color, black and white and none of them are framed. We focus on a photo of a woman (Emily) with an Irish Wolfhound (O’Howleran). Camera follows Estrella out of Emily’s office and into the hall. She goes past the cat “bed” (a basket on top of a card table with a computer on it) and pets the cat.

A Note from the Writers
We’re involved with animals. Between us we have 4 cats and 4 dogs, all but one of which is a rescue. We’ve both been certified by Delta Society as Pet Partners – Jean with cats and Rusty with dogs for a total of nineteen years.
We worked as volunteers with Therapy Partners, Inc., an autonomous agency providing animal assisted therapy with all handlers and partners certified as Delta Society Pet Partners.
We know first-hand the importance of the human-animal bond, and that’s the genesis of our work on this series. It is what informs us, makes us whole, makes us human. We’re tickled pink to be "Going to the Dogs".
"Going to the Dogs" is enhanced by the advice of trusted consultants, the veterinarians who have attended our four-legged family members for decades.

Character List: Animal Companions
77.5 million dogs and 93.6 million cats reign supreme as companion animals in US homes. Other species win hearts with their companionship, too. Bird ownership is growing. Fish are an ever-popular presence. Rodents and reptiles have crept into our affections, as well, and their numbers are increasing steadily. Companion animals featured on the comedy Going to the Dogs range from the common to the curious.
